Happy Book Birthday to Sinner's Isle

Today we celebrate the book birthday of Sinner's Isle. We sat down with Musa Angela Montoya to learn all about the inspiration behind this book.

But first, a little bit about the book:

SINNER'S ISLE is a spellbinding YA romantic fantasy about a powerful witch who will do anything to escape the remote island she’s being held captive on, including blackmail a notorious, charming pirate who washes up on shore.

Where did you get the idea to write this particular story?
Sinner’s Isle came to me by complete surprise. I was in the shower and an image of a young woman being prepared for something she wasn’t happy about popped into my head. I started to explore the idea of control and what it is to be a young woman who feels trapped within the confines of a man’s world. The world of Sinner’s Isle was birthed from there.

What 3 words would you use to describe your book?
Sinner’s Isle is fun, deceptively-deep, and swoony.

What is the most important lesson you have learned as a writer until now?
To manage my expectations. I’ve learned (the hard way) to go into every publishing related situation with hope and excitement but not necessarily expecting anything. For me, this mindset has made a huge difference. When something amazing happens, I’m pleasantly surprised. When something not so amazing happens, I can shrug it off a bit more easily.

What 3 recommendations would you give writers who are starting out?
 Find your writing community.
Never stop learning about craft.
Remember your value as a human does not correlate with the success of your book(s).

What comes next for you as an author?
I’m so very excited to work on my second book with Joy Revolution Books, A Cruel Thirst. This YA Romantasy follows Carolina Fuentes, a wannabe vampire hunter, and Lalo Villalobos, a recently turned vampire with a heart of gold.
