Join us in celebrating AN OFRENDA FOR PERRO book birthday! We sat down with Musa Judith Valdés B. to learn all about the inspiration behind the this book. But first, a little bit about the book: Benito loves Perro. But when Perro passes away, Benito is heartbroken. During the Day of the Dead celebration, he tries to understand the meaning of the flores de cempasuchil, candles, pan de muertos, photographs, and sharing memories of departed loved ones. By creating his own special altar for Perro, he realizes that his love for his beloved companion, and the happiness Perro gave him, will always remain. Told with honesty and hope, this heartfelt book is the perfect story for any child coping with loss, and for those who celebrate--or want to learn more about--Día de los Muertos. What inspired you to become a writer? The final project for my illustration degree required me to write a short story. During this process, I first stumbled upon a passion for storytelling, which seemed like a natural fit, given my love for illustration. What three words would you use to describe your book? Emotional, reflective, and cultural. Where did you get the idea to write this particular story? AN OFRENDA FOR PERRO came from a personal experience of mine. When my dog passed from cancer just a few weeks after the diagnosis, I was troubled and sad. Amidst my mourning, I turned to writing to fill the void as part of the healing process. AN OFRENDA FOR PERRO helped me to process my grief, cherish and hold onto the beautiful times shared with my dog, and find solace. It also took me back to the fundamental essence of the Dia de Muertos celebration – that the departed are never truly gone. If we remember them, a part of them, a legacy of memories and emotions, lives on. What was your favorite part of the publication process with this story? Without a doubt, it was working with my editor, Charlie Ilgunas. He was exceptionally kind, understanding, and incredibly efficient in his work. It was a fantastic experience. I hope to collaborate again with him on future titles. What is the most important lesson you have learned as a writer until now? It would have to be the importance of savoring the privilege of publishing a book. For us writers, it is easy to become fixated on what comes next and to lose sight of the present, the now. Unfortunately, this fixation can steal away the joy of our accomplishments. Recognizing and appreciating each milestone during our writing journey is vital. It reminds us of how privileged we are to have the opportunity to bring our stories to life.
