Cover Reveal: Lupita's Hurricane Palomitas

7/10/2023

Today we’re thrilled to reveal the cover for Lupita’s Hurricane Palomitas, written by Alexandra Alessandri and illustrated by Anastasiya Kanavaliuk, which releases on May 21, 2024 from Beaming Books.

A little about the book:
Kindness can be shown during even the harshest of storms.

Shutters rattled. Wind howled. As a ferocious hurricane descends upon her town, Lupita finds two baby birds who have fallen out of their nest and brings them inside to shelter them from the storm. While Lupita and her family wait out the tempest, she focuses on protecting the palomitas to alleviate her own fears and hopes she can soon reunite them with their mother.

Perfect for families living in hurricane-prone states or with children who have storm-related anxieties, Lupita's Hurricane Palomitas offers a gentle, soothing story about extending a hand of kindness to others even while facing fears of our own. The book includes Spanish-language vocabulary words and a glossary in the back.

From Alexandra: When I first saw Anastasiya’s cover illustration, I was blown away (no pun intended!) It’s sweet and gentle, and captures the tone of the story so well. I also love Lupita’s tenderness as she holds the baby palomitas in her hands contrasted against the impending storm.

Living in South Florida, I’m no stranger to tropical storms and hurricanes. I’ve weathered countless storms-–though none as impactful as Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 2017, as my husband, son, and I prepared for the possibility of Hurricane Irma, my son discovered two baby mourning doves whose nest had been knocked off our palm tree.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this moment would become inspiration for Lupita’s Hurricane Palomitas, which has been beautifully illustrated by Anastasiya Kanavaliuk!

Anastasiya Kanavaliuk was raised in a Belarusian city full of trees and water, and she has been inspired by nature since childhood. As a little girl, she loved creating handmade things, reading outside, and redrawing characters and scenes from her favorite W.I.T.C.H. comics. With her parents' support, Ana's hobby became her career, and now she creates her own characters and illustrates their adventures. Her educational journey was long yet exciting, and it still goes on. After years of art classes at school and two years of Art Design at the university, Ana decided to study Graphic Design in Poland, where she currently lives. She's working hard to receive her MA in Graphic Design in 2024. When not busy drawing, Ana loves traveling, spending time with her family and friends, and learning Korean.
