We're so excited to reveal the cover for IN THE GROVES from debut author-illustrator Andrea Cruz Floren!

In the Groves is a whimsical Spanglish picture book about finding belonging in an unlikely place.

Clara visits her abuelo and many, many cousins in California every year. And every year, her family tells tall tales about her abuelo’s orange groves: There’s magic! There’s mischief! There’s monstruos! But Clara’s never been to the orange groves. And she’s determined to change that.

So when her cousins aren’t looking, Clara sneaks into her abuelo’s truck and makes her way to the orange groves. Once Abuelo spots her, he and Clara have a wondrous time serenading oranges, bravely defending the groves against gophers, and eating some delicious tacos with—WHEW—just a little bit of spice.

Soon, Clara has magical tall tales to tell of her own. For she’s no longer just a visitor: She belongs to the groves, and the groves belong to her.

A little more about the cover: "The book was heavily inspired by my own childhood experience, growing up far away from my Mexican-American family. I never did get to visit the groves my grandfather worked in and this story is my imagining of what would have happened if I did get the chance to spend the day in the groves with abuelo. There are lots of little hidden special meanings throughout the book that pay tribute to my family and friends, I can't wait to see what they find. "

​Andrea grew up in the Great Plains of South Dakota, surrounded by grasslands, cornfields, and brothers. Raised on dirt bikes and homemade tortillas she often grappled with where she fit in as a mixed Mexican-American kid in the 80s Heartland. She filled her days with stories by creating her own books, choreographing dances, directing plays starring her reluctant siblings, and browsing the bookmobile for inspiration.

​Today Andrea loves to explore stories with themes of belonging, resilience, interconnectedness, family, ancestral lore, and everyday magic.
