Preferred Age Category: Middle Grade Preferred Genre or Sub-Genres: Realistic fiction, mystery (no fantasy, though some magical elements are great and ok). As a mentor I love working on: Big picture manuscript edits, refining opening pages/scene, line level edits for when the big picture and structure are solid Areas of expertise/strengths as a mentor: I love picking up on areas for development and growth within the manuscript, homing in on the character arcs and plot structure issues and pacing, and then looking for areas where dialogue, interiority, humor or other techniques can be used to enhance the manuscript. Areas of weakness as a mentor: Not great at writing a query from scratch but happy to edit and make suggestions for how to improve upon it. |

María José is a writer of children’s books. Her favorite stories usually include animals, friendships, family, and magic. She grew up snorkeling and hiking in her homeland of Honduras, where nature and culture nourished her soul. Maria’s studies in ecology and education inform her work. Her debut novel, Turtles of the Midnight Moon, will be published by Knopf in the Spring of 2023. When she’s not writing, you can find her reading, walking her three furry friends, or maybe out on a family mountain bike ride with her amazing daughters and husband.
